Boaters are perhaps the hat with the longest life and widest style span. From at least the 1890’s they were popular with men and women, and children – not a common thing, in the gendered fashions of the times. Boaters could be straw or wool. We call our wool ones “Adventurers” and put them with the low top hats. Women’s Boaters could be natural or coloured straw; plain with a band, or trimmed as much as any hat can stand. Men’s might have striped or 2-tone band. Boaters are light, cool and comfortable. You might enjoy the fact they float, or you might appreciate the hat (***find the term) anchor, a cord that buttons to your coat, to prevent flyaway hats, if you can’t simply pin it to your hair!
